Is CBD suitable for animals?
Are CBD oils suitable for animals and how to administer them?
People all over the world benefit from the positive effects of CBD oils. Cannabidiols help with inflammation and pain, sleep problems, but also with serious diseases such as migraine, epilepsy or Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Even though the effects of CBD on pets have not yet been studied in extensive scientific studies, the well-known effects of CBD on the human body and the practical experiences of owners of four-legged pets help us. So how do CBDs work in animals , how to dose them or what diseases can they help with? And they can't hurt them?
CBD affects the body's balance
Back in 1992, two scientists at an Israeli university made a breakthrough discovery . For the first time, they identified the so-called endocannabinoid – the building block of the endocannabinoid system.
This system is found in the body of every mammal regardless of whether they use CBD or not. According to current knowledge, it helps to regulate processes in the body, which in turn are responsible for other, more generally known systems – digestive, nervous or immune.
The action of cannabinoids in the body can be compared to the immune system. Endogenous (originating inside the body) kabaninoids have an important role in the healing process, they can regulate pain, anxiety and also inhibit the degeneration of neurons in diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. They also show very good results in patients with epilepsy, in whom they reduce the occurrence of seizures.
Based on this knowledge, many owners have decided to give CBD preparations to their pets as well. They thus help them better manage, for example, frequent states of stress and anxiety from separation or noise , pain, but also work in more serious kidney diseases or cancer.
One question above all: Is CBD safe for my dog or cat?
Cannabinoids are extracted from hemp, but unlike THC, they are not psychoactive. What does it mean? That CBD does not affect the psyche in the same way as, for example, the use of marijuana, they do not induce euphoric or ecstatic states of mind. This is also confirmed by the World Health Organization, which also stated that cannabinoids do not have a negative effect on health and do not cause addiction.
The same applies to animals, but we have to be even more careful about the dosage. It should be remembered that our pets often weigh only a fraction of what we do. The amount of CBD that our body can handle could harm a several-kilo fur.
When purchasing CBD oil for your pet, avoid those that also contain THC. Although CBD oils with a THC content of up to 0.3% are considered safe (non-toxic), it is better to reach for pure CBD oil without THC .
A common question is whether human CBD oil can be given to an animal . The answer is simple - unequivocally yes, the so-called animal CBD oil should be equal in quality to human tincture. Care should only be taken with oils with a higher concentration of CBD in order to choose the appropriate dose for your dog or cat. This applies especially to smaller individuals.
What diseases and problems does CBD help with in dogs?
In 2019, the team of authors published a study that includes knowledge and experience with administering cannabidiol to dogs for various health problems and diseases. Participants reported the impact of CBD products on dogs with certain diseases. This research also showed that CBD can really help with, for example, acute and chronic pain, anxiety or fear of storms and fireworks .
CBD oil for anxiety in dogs and cats
Even the most cheerful animal cannot avoid anxiety. It can be triggered by various factors - separation anxiety caused by being separated from the owner is common, and no less dogs or cats are afraid of storms and, in cities, of New Year's Eve celebrations. Therefore, many dog and cat owners cannot praise the calming effects of CBD oils, thanks to which their pets manage these stressful moments much better. And, who will lie to himself, the human part of the "clamp" is also more satisfied this way.
CBD as an aid in inflammation and degeneration of the musculoskeletal system
Commonly known properties of CBD include its anti-inflammatory effect. That is why they are suitable as an adjunct to the treatment of various inflammatory diseases that dogs and cats suffer from. Among them we also include arthritis - an inflammatory disease of the joints. The effects of CBD have also been shown to be extremely promising in a study aimed at treating osteoarthritis . Due to its strong anti-inflammatory effects, CBD can significantly increase the quality of life with hip dysplasia . It will also be an excellent help for other diseases of the locomotor system, pain in bones, joints or teeth.
Alleviation of seizures in epilepsy
The effects of CBD in epilepsy are confirmed by several scientific studies . According to a clinical study published in 2016 in the prestigious Lancet magazine, the use of cannabidiol reduced the occurrence of seizures by a median of 36.5% . Patients involved in a more recent study from 2020 also reported fewer seizures. Since the endocannabinoid system of animals is similar to that of humans, CBD is offered as a suitable natural alternative to anticonvulsants .
CBD and cancer
Cancer is a complicated disease and we will never tell you that CBD will cure your dog or cat of it. However, it should be remembered that the known effects of CBD can improve the quality of life of such sick animals. Cannabinoids work against pain, improve sleep, can restore appetite and help with spasms. And since CBD is on a natural basis , it does not bring with it any serious side effects.
On this topic, the hypothesis that even CBD stops the growth of cancer cells and metastases should not be forgotten.
The best form for animals? CBD oil
Especially cats, but often also dogs, can be quite picky creatures that do not know anything like self-denial for their own good. For these cases, there are even granules or chewable treats containing CBD.
However, if it is at all possible, definitely reach for CBD oil . The latter is the most effective not only in terms of absorption, but also due to the flexibility and adjustment of the dosage . The ideal administration of CBD oil is, like in humans, under the tongue. However, many cats and dogs can have their own "opinion" about the taste of the tincture. In that case, it is recommended to mix CBD oil into their food .
Before buying , do a thorough review and definitely don't buy the first cheapest option. With quality and efficiency, it could be anything. Make sure the CBD oil is organic and lab tested . Every serious seller also has a certificate that proves it.
Here at Remedika you can buy honest and high-quality CBD oils that are laboratory tested and are 100% natural . Dosage of CBD oil for animals
As we mentioned in the introduction, human and animal dosing are two different worlds. The use of CBD mainly depends on body weight, so it is clear that especially for cats and small breeds of dogs, the daily dose will be a fraction of the human dose.
Similar to humans, when administering CBD oils to dogs or cats, it is recommended to start with small doses and gradually increase them. In this way, you will avoid unnecessary possible side effects (dry mouth, drowsiness, low blood pressure) and the impact on the body will not be so sudden. By gradually increasing the dose, it is also monitored for each individual at which dose CBD has the best effect.
When calculating the daily dose , the rule of thumb is 1 milligram of CBD per approximately 4 kilograms of weight .
- For the smallest dogs and cats weighing up to 4 kg , the recommended starting dose is 0.5 mg CBD, medium 1 mg and higher 3 mg.
- For animals weighing 5 to 8 kg , we start with a dose of 1 mg, increase to 3 mg, and a strong dose is 5 mg of CBD.
- Dogs weighing around 20 kg take at least 5 mg, the average dose is 15 and the highest is 25 mg of CBD.
- For dogs weighing more than 40 kilograms , the starting dose is 10 mg, medium 30 mg and strong up to 50 mg of CBD.
You can use the calculator on this page to calculate the appropriate dose, but we also recommend consulting it with your veterinarian.
